DUBROVAČKA KARAKA
The Dubrovačka karaka is a large sailing ship from the time of the Republic of Dubrovnik, the 15th century, and is among the largest ships of this period. The karaka was used to transport expensive cargo because it had armaments, up to 40 cannons. The karaka had three sails, the middle one was the largest. The sails were heavy and were raised with a hand winch. The stern was high, which is a feature of ocean ships.

The karaka was improved at the end of the 16th century so that it could transport up to 1000 soldiers and 900 tons of cargo. The inhabitants of Dubrovnik were very patient and skilled craftsmen when building the karaka, utilising only the best wood. The karaka even sailed to Great Britain and the USA.

The Dominican Monastery in Dubrovnik houses the most valuable example of a Dubrovnik karaka from the 15th century.
