OLD COAT OF ARMS OF THE CITY OF RIJEKA
In 1659, Habsburg Emperor Leopold issued to the city of Rijeka a charter awarding it a coat of arms. The coat of arms was marked with the motto “Indeficienter”, meaning “inexhaustible”. Inexhaustible is the jug from which flows the plentiful water of eternal life.

The eagle that carries the jug in its claws is a sunbird, a depiction of fire, heights, light, and symbolises humankind’s eternal yearning for heights. The two-headed eagle from Austria’s coat of arms originates back to the times of the Crusades. Above its heads is the imperial crown of the house of Habsburg. The eagle is an imperial bird, the sky’s equivalent to the lion, and this is the reason why it is commonly a symbol on coats of arms and shields.
The coat of arms of Rijeka appeared for the first time on a drawing of the city tower from 1689.
